Science Under Sail Cruises
On select dates this spring we will have a visiting scientist from the VA Institute of Marine Science aboard for our afternoon cruises. The scientists will talk about their area of expertise and we may to some scientific sampling in the York River! These cruises depart at 2pm and the price is $35 adults/$20 children. Here are the dates and topics for 2014:
April 30: Gliders Team up with Dr. Donglai Gong of VIMS to learn about underwater gliders and how scientists are using this exciting technology.
May 7: Diamondback Terrapins Join Dr. Diane Tulipani of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for a hands on look at the only turtles in the U.S. who live exclusively in the estuary.
May 14: Drifters and Jellies Professor Dr. Deb Steinberg of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science will use zooplankton netted from the York River to discuss the wonderful variety of Bay “drifters” and the important role these creatures play in marine ecology and food webs.
May 21: Fishes near and far Graduate student Mark Stratton of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science will cast a net to see what’s swimming beneath the Alliance. A “show and tell” of preserved fishes from places near and far will be shared by VIMS’ Collections Manager Sarah Huber. You’ll also learn how fish are preserved and catalogued.
